Cancer cells are transformed cells that have acquired a series of changes that permit them to form tumors. They arise when the genes responsible for regulating cell division are damaged. The uncontrolled and often rapid proliferation of cells can lead to benign or malignant tumors. Benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body or invade other tissues. Malignant tumors can invade other organs, spread to distant sites (metastasis) and become life-threatening.
There are seven identifiable "Hallmarks" of cancer cells: self-sufficiency in growth signals, insensitivity to growth-inhibitory (antigrowth) signals, evasion of programmed cell death (apoptosis), limitless replicative potential, sustained angiogenesis, tissue invasion and altered immunity.
Cancer cell lines are valuable in vitro model systems that are widely used in cancer research and drug discovery. Figure 1 represents the historical evolution of the process for the stabilization and proper use of cancer cell lines. The advent of cancer cell lines, with the stabilization of the HeLa cell line, revolutionized the approach to in vitro cancer research. The main reason for their use is their ability to provide an unlimited source of biological material that is able to grow indefinitely in vitro. Under the right conditions and with appropriate controls, authenticated cancer cell lines retain most of the genetic properties of the cancer of origin.
