Primary cells are derived from tissue and not modified, so they are more similar to the in vivo state and exhibit normal physiology. Therefore, they provide excellent systems models to study the normal physiology and biochemistry of cells, and the effects of drugs and toxic compounds on cells. The primary cells have a limited lifespan and will undergo a limited number of cell divisions before entering senescence. Common primary cell types include epithelial cells, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, keratinocytes, neurons, melanocytes, astrocytes, chondrocytes, adipocytes, smooth muscle cells, osteoblasts, hepatocytes, etc. Primary culture is the cell culture system that is formed by culture cells directly obtained from tissue.
