Ordering Information

A nanoparticle or ultrafine particle is usually defined as a particle of matter between 1 and 100 nanometres (nm) in diameter. Nanoparticles have received enormous attention as a promising tool to enhance target-specific drug delivery and diagnosis. For diagnostic applications, the specificity and sensitivity of imaging can be significantly improved by using nanoparticles as contrast enhancement agents. Nanoparticles enable targeted and controlled drug delivery and various in vitro and in vivo techniques characterize a new system and predict its clinical efficacy.

Applications of nanotechnology in biology include genetic engineering, drug delivery, detection, diagnosis, cancer treatment, and agriculture. One of the most well-known uses of nanotechnology is in drug delivery.

Nanoparticles can be prepared from a variety of materials such as proteins, polysaccharides and synthetic polymers. The selection of matrix materials is dependent on many factors including (a) the size of nanoparticles required; (b) the inherent properties of the drug, e.g., aqueous solubility and stability; (c) surface characteristics such as charge and permeability; (d) the degree of biodegradability, biocompatibility,  and toxicity; (e) the drug release profile desired; and (f) the antigenicity of the final product.
