Among gold nanomaterials, gold nanorods (GNRs) have attracted much attention because of their simple preparation method, high yield, adjustable aspect ratio and unique fluorescence properties. Gold nanorods(GNRs) have broad application prospects in nanobiology and biomedicine.

Application of Gold Nanorods

Gold nanorods (GNRs) are widely used in nano-biology fields such as gene carrier, biological imaging, molecular probe, biosensor and photothermal therapy.

--Gene vectors: Gold nanorods (GNRs) are rod-shaped anisotropic nanomaterials with large specific surface area, easy preparation and good biocompatibility. They are excellent nanomaterials for carrying DNA and SiRNA.

--Biological imaging: Gold nanorods (GNRs) have the advantages of enhanced scattering signal, no photobleaching and adjustable longitudinal plasmon absorption, and can be used for multifunctional imaging and analysis, so as to accurately predict and diagnose diseases.

--Molecular probes: The molecular probes of gold nanorods (GNRs) have different length-diameter ratios, high sensitivity and the detection limit can reach nanomolar level.

--Biosensor: Gold nanorods (GNRs) have the characteristics of surface plasmon resonance. The slight change of electrolyte in solution environment may cause the change of local refractive index, and then cause the change of plasma resonance frequency. It can be characterized by ultraviolet absorption spectrum, and this characteristic of gold nanorods can be applied to biosensor.

--Photothermal therapy: Gold nanorods (GNRs) can effectively convert near infrared light into heat, so that local heating can denature protein and kill cells, which has great advantages in cancer treatment.

Production of Gold Nanorods:

Gold nanorods (GNRs) have unique advantages, and can be synthesized by different methods under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the light absorption efficiency of gold nanorods (GNRs) at the longitudinal plasma resonance site is higher than that of other gold nanomaterials.

At present, there are many methods to prepare gold nanorods (GNRs). For example: porous aluminum template method, seed-mediated growth metho, delectrochemical method and photochemical method. Among them, seed-mediated growth has a long history, including seed synthesis and seed growth. Seed-mediated growth method is particularly attractive and widely used because it is very simple and flexible in manufacturing different aspect ratios of gold nanorods (GNRs) and maintaining relatively high yield.

The surface of gold nanorods (GNRs) must be modified with a certain number of ligands to be stable. If there is no surface ligand, the gold nanorods (GNRs) will accumulate irreversibly. CTAB is one of the most commonly used surface ligands for gold nanorods (GNRs), but its high toxicity interferes with biological processes, making surface modification of gold nanorods (GNRs) particularly important. Inorganic silica, small-molecule compounds and polymers can be used to modify the surface of gold nanorods (GNRs).
